Traditional Knowledge (TK) and Traditional cultural expressions (TCE)
Traditional knowledge (TK) and traditional cultural expressions (TCEs) have intrinsic social, cultural, spiritual, economic, scientific, intellectual and educational value (WIPO). Traditional cultures and knowledge systems represent a living body of knowledge, subject to ongoing innovation and creativity.
According to the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), TK is a living body of knowledge that is developed, sustained and passed on from generation to generation within a community, often forming part of its cultural and spiritual identity. It includes knowledge, know-how, skills, innovations and practices that are passed between generations, in a traditional context, and that form part of the traditional lifestyle of Indigenous and local communities who act as their guardian or custodian.
Examples include:
-
TK related to traditional dress, customs, accessories and garments that identify a certain community;
-
TK related to material culture and handicrafts production;
-
TK related to cloth weaving and cloth dyeing techniques, and materials related to dyes, paints, etc.;
-
TK related to traditional methods of hairstyling and body decoration (including tattoos, adornments), and traditional designs and methods in jewelry, stonework, woodwork, etc.;
-
TK related to materials related to perfumes, incenses and aromatics;
-
TK relate to traditional cosmetics and other related products for body use;
-

Traditional Cultural Expressions (TCE) are the creative form (the “expression”) in which traditional culture and knowledge is embodied or expressed. TCEs may be either intangible, tangible or, sometimes, a combination of the two.
Examples include:
-
